Intent
At Silkstone Primary, we want to instil a love and an excitement for art where all children can believe in themselves as artists. We want our pupils to confidently express their individual creativity through their art work, working both individually and collaboratively. To use art successfully to develop their ideas and imagination, and to support their emotional well-being. To develop critical thinking and respond to their own artwork and to the art work of others, with sensitivity and a respectful appreciation. We want our children to appreciate the contribution of art and design to culture and how it can reflect and shape history. We appreciate the role of art in promoting good mental health and the opportunities it provides for self expression.
Implementation
Art forms an important part of the curriculum and is used to develop children’s understanding in all subjects. The delivery of our art curriculum will provide opportunities for pupils to be inspired by the work of a range of artists, architects and designers and investigate their work. Learning is sequenced to enable children to develop and improve their mastery of art and design techniques including: drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials. Children will use sketchbooks to record their observations and to experiment with a range of media. Children are expected to be reflective and evaluate their work, thinking about how they can make changes and keep improving using the appropriate vocabulary. We provide opportunities for children to engage in art through visits, and visiting artists, designers and craft-makers.
Impact
Our pupils will be able to express themselves confidently and imaginatively through art and have a greater understanding of, and appreciation for, art in the world around them. They will have the tools to develop and express themselves as artists, both individually and alongside others.

Barnsley Rotary Club Children's Art Competition
We are really proud of Laurie, who won first place in the KS1 category for her art work. She was presented with a trophy and set of art materials and we have a silver plate for the school. Congratulations to all the entrants.
