Silkstone Primary School

A School with Soul

Physical Education

Intent

Good physical and mental health is one of our key curriculum drivers. PE at Silkstone Primary School aims to develop the knowledge, skills and capabilities necessary to support the mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing of our children now and in their future. We aim to instil a lifelong interest in sport, active lifestyles and physical and mental well-being. Our intent is to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical activities and become physically confident. To learn self-discipline, respect, team work and that to be successful you must work hard, show resilience and have the determination to believe that anything can be achieved. In addition, children learn the importance and value of cooperating and collaborating with others, as part of a team, and an understanding of fairness and equity of play. We develop young leaders who are able to organise and officiate a range sporting activities. We aim to ensure our children can swim at least 25 metres before the end of Year 6 and know how to remain safe in and around water.

Implementation

Pupils at Silkstone Primary School participate in high quality PE and sporting activities.  Our PE programme incorporates a variety of sports to ensure all children develop the confidence, tolerance and the appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses. We provide opportunities for all children to engage in extra-curricular activities before, during and after school, in addition to competitive sporting events. We actively engage in a broad range of borough wide sporting events and competitions. This is an inclusive approach, which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also well-being. All children in Year 4 have swimming lessons. Children who cannot swim 25metres have an opportunity in Year 6 for additional lessons. The whole of Key Stage Two participate annually in Cross Country and Orienteering Events. We hold a ‘Tour de Silkstone’ cycle event every year to coincide with the Tour de Yorkshire. We work with Team Active to deliver high quality lessons inter-school competitions. Team Active train our Junior Play Leaders to deliver activities during lunchtime play. We also have other sports providers in school, including Cricket Allstars and Bruce Dyer Football.

Impact

Children will be physically confident and have developed both the physical and personal skills to participate in a range of sporting activities. They will know the contribution of PE to leading a healthy lifestyle and have the interest and self discipline to take responsibility for their own health and fitness.

Girl's Footy
We had a really fun day playing fun football games and a few matches. KS! loved playing 'Ouch' where they got to hit the teacher with the ball - we did try to dodge them, but they were rather good!

Girls Football

Our Year 5 and Year 6 Girls Football Team did themselves proud coming first in their tournament against the Penistone Pyramid.  Future Lionesses!

DAN the Skipping Man

Dan the Skipping Man visited school to share methods we can use to improve our skipping. We learned the basics, to more challenging tricks which we have been busy practicing. It's great to see the children so enthusiastic about skipping as it's a wonderful exercise to keep us all fit and healthy.   We bought lots of new ropes, which we are enjoying using at playtimes.

Year 3 Netball

Congratulations to our Year 3 Netballers who played incredibly well in their first ever tournament against other local primary schools.  We are very proud of you.

Taekwondo Taster

This was an hour's free free session with a trained member of staff for the children to try some of the skills and see if they enjoy it and want to take it further. One of the club members also showed them some of their skills and joined the photo with us.
